The MYP objectives for each subject outline a set of skills that students can expect to develop over the course of their studies. It’s a compelling list – who wouldn’t get excited about students learning to do things like practically explore ideas to inform the development of a final artwork or performance (arts), evaluate the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of the scientific investigation (sciences) and design, explain and justify a plan to improve physical performance and health (PHE)? But what does that look like in terms of assessment?

This resource is designed to give you a few ideas to kick off your own creative brainstorming. We’ve compiled a few examples to illustrate the kinds of tasks that are typical in MYP subjects. This snapshot of ideas will help you to envision what assessment could look like in your subject so that you can start to imagine even more options to suit the features of your course and your students’ interests. You’ll see how each of the MYP objectives can be assessed in a variety of different kinds of tasks.

Ideas for using this resource:

  • Share this in a department meeting to initiate a discussion about possible assessment tasks
  • Keep a deck of these cards near the photocopier so that teachers can browse the ideas while they wait for their copies
  • Use it in an MYP meeting to brainstorm opportunities to make assessment tasks more varied and appealing to students
