IB schools are spaces of continuous growth and learning. Everyone, including leaders and teachers, are on a journey of learning and improvement. In this blog, we will explore the Approaches to Teaching (ATT) as a tool for goal setting and providing opportunities for continuous growth in your school.

What are the Approaches to Teaching (ATT)?

The Approaches to Teaching (ATTs) in the IB are instructional strategies that enhance student learning. They reflect the IB’s beliefs on effective learning. The ATTs provide a practical framework for educators, promoting deep understanding, critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary connections, and student engagement. They empower students to become lifelong learners ready to thrive in a dynamic world. There are five ATTs identified by the IB:

1: Teachers use inquiry, action and reflection to develop natural curiosity in students. (0403-01)

2: Teachers focus on conceptual understanding to support students in developing their ideas. (0403-02)

3: Teachers use local and global contexts to establish the relevance of the curriculum. (0403-03)

4: Teachers promote effective relationships and purposeful collaboration to create a positive and dynamic learning community. (0403-04)

5: Teachers remove barriers to learning to enable every student to develop, pursue and achieve challenging personal learning goals. (0403-05)

How can we use the ATT for goal setting?

Goal setting is not just a box to be checked off on a list of to-dos; it’s a powerful tool that can help teachers achieve their professional growth and development goals.

To make the goal-setting process easier and more effective, Toddle has developed a simplified teacher goal-setting template grounded in the Approaches to Teaching (ATT). Our four step goal-setting process familiarises teachers with the ATT and leads them through an entire year of goal-setting and reflection.
