About the session

How do students learn at school? How is this determined and practiced?

The learning habits that students develop during their years at school often come to shape their growth and success well after. For Diploma Program students, at the cusp of stepping out into the real world, it is imperative that schools create & nurture cultures that promote lifelong learning and curiosity. Creating a learning environment that fosters self-directed inquiry can often become challenging in the midst of preparing students for crucial assessments.

Dr Shalini Advani
Dr. Advani is the founding Director of Pathways School, Noida. She is a board member of New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) & an accreditation team visitor for NEASC and Council of International Schools & (CIS). She has previously served as Director of Education, Learn Today. Her wide experience in setting up and heading schools includes creating effective learning environments, school management systems, staffing and curriculum development with the IB and GCSE curriculum as well as CBSE schools. She has conducted numerous teacher trainings on how children learn, on collaborative teaching and whole school development. Dr. Advani has been a speaker at various global conferences and in seminars on university admissions post-IB at the IB Asia Pacific Conference and the IC3 Conference, on technology in education at EdTech Review, on Intercultural Learning, Creating a Compassionate Systems Framework Curriculum for Extraordinary Times, on The Future of Education for OP Jindal University and on effective technology use in learning at multiple technology summits.She cares passionately about creating a dynamic educational environment for all children and believes that encouragement and a sense of humour are the most important tools for educators.
Vanita Uppal
An international educator for over 25 years, Ms. Vanita Uppal OBE is the Director of The British School, New Delhi. In 2014, the British government conferred the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on her, making her the only Indian serving Principal to be bestowed with this honour. Ms. Uppal serves on the FOBISIA Board (Federation of British International schools of Asia), co-chairs the CI (Cambridge International) North India network and is a member of Visiting Accreditation Teams for Council of International Schools (CIS) to accredit international schools globally. A trainer in classroom pedagogy and leadership, she has presented at international forums such as the Cambridge International ‘Leadership Symposium’ (Cambridge, UK), Cambridge Summit (India), Bett Asia Leadership summit (Kuala Lampur, Malaysia), Global Round Square Conference (Germany), and at The Association of International Schools in India (TAISI) to name a few. Ms. Uppal is also a British Council Ambassador and mentor. Ms. Vanita holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephens College, Delhi University, and a teaching degree from Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi.
Frank Braccia
Frank Braccia is the Head of School at Goldcrest International School in Pune, India. He currently serves as Vice President for the Indian IB Heads Association and is also the chairperson for the IB Heads Association of Western India. Mr. Braccia began his international teaching career in 1991, and has been working with IB schools since 1994. He has been associated with International schools in Finland, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Brunei, Syria, Grand Cayman, Norway and, since 2011, in India. Frank has previously served as an IB DP coordinator, as well as School Principal across the IB continuum. He has taught subjects across the IB including DP Economics, DP History, TOK and MYP Humanities. He is native to the United States and holds a BA in History from Temple University, and a M.Ed from Antioch University.
Peter Murphy
Peter Murphy started his teaching career in 1979, with a rich array of experiences serving as educational and administrative leader in the UK and Germany. Peter has served as Director of esteemed institutions such as Bonn International School, Vienna International School, and is currently heading the Oberoi International School in Mumbai, India. Along with professional duties, Peter has served as the Board Chair of the Association of German International Schools (AGIS), and the German International Schools Sports Tournament (GISST). Peter has represented Africa, the Middle East and Europe on the IB Curriculum and Assessment Executive and has chaired the IBAEM Regional Council as well as the IB Heads Council. Peter also founded and served as Chair of the Association of Central European Schools (ACES), bringing representatives from 39 schools across 9 countries together, and continues to provide support in school accreditation for the Council of International Schools (CIS).
