Join us for the MYP Candidate Schools Symposium, a unique opportunity designed specifically for educators and coordinators that are new to the MYP. Gain valuable insights and practical guidance from long-standing IB practitioners Rita Bateson and Barbara Bilgre as you navigate the path to becoming an MYP school.

Over four engaging sessions infused with practical AI use-cases, we will dive into the essential milestones, documentation needs, and best practices vital for a successful journey to becoming an MYP school. You’ll also have the opportunity to connect with fellow MYP coordinators who are in your shoes!

Session 1

Leading a strong MYP programme

Rita Bateson

Educator, Author & Mentor

Rita Bateson is a distinguished author and educator, curriculum developer and mentor in international schools for the past twenty years. In her journey as an educator, she has worked in several prestigious schools and contexts and returned back to her native Ireland in 2018 as founding Head of Secondary for Nord Anglia International School. Outside the classroom Rita has also worked as Senior Curriculum and Assessment Manager for Mathematics and Sciences at the IB Global Headquarter in the Hague. Rita has also authored four textbooks for MYP Mathematics in use in international schools around the globe. These resources are designed to align with the International Baccalaureate philosophy, emphasising inquiry-based learning, conceptual understanding, and real-world application and are crafted to inspire critical thinking and a deeper appreciation for mathematics. She is a passionate advocate for the IB, the MYP and for her passion of Mathematics Education.

Barbara Bilgre

Former MYP Coordinator | MYP Science Educator at American International School of Lusaka

An educator for over 20 years, Barbara has taught DP Biology, ESS and MYP Science. She has successfully led three schools through MYP authorization, and has also served as CAS Coordinator, Head of Department for Science, and Year Group Leader. She used to conduct research on the social patterns of wild dolphins, and has run her own elephant behavioural research project in Ghana.

Veronika Mendoza

MYP Coordinator

Veronika Mendoza is the MYP Coordinator at Joel C. Harris Middle School in San Antonio, Texas. She previously served as the PYP Coordinator for five years at Huppertz Elementary where she started and developed the PYP Programme from their candidacy phase to their authorization years. During this time, Veronika used Toddle schoolwide to support her teachers in managing their units, tracking students progress through student portfolios and progress reports, developing learning experiences with the support of Toddle Community, and communicating with parents. She also served a year as an MYP Coordinator and two years as a Balanced Literacy Instructional Coach. Veronika is also an Independent Erickson and Lanning CBCI Certified Trainer. Veronika has presented at numerous roundtables and meetings, Texas Literacy Conferences, and Global Conferences in the United States, Canada and The Netherlands.

Rachel Bodily

Associate Director, Learning and Engagement, Toddle

Rachel is passionate about the Middle Years Programme and currently works for Toddle as an Associate Director of Learning and Engagement. She most recently taught MYP mathematics and coordinated the Service as Action programme at the International School of Amsterdam. She continues to teach in the form of one-on-one tutoring and is an educational technology enthusiast.

Jan-Mark Seewald

Independent Educational Consultant

Jan-Mark is an independent educational consultant with 25 years of experience in education, specializing in inquiry-driven and concept-based learning. He has worked extensively as part of the IB Educator Network and provides training, curriculum development, and coaching services, drawing on his background in teaching and leadership roles in a number of international schools.

Jan-Mark spent almost two decades in the classroom, teaching middle and high school Mathematics, Science, and Design. He now works with schools to improve their approaches to teaching and learning. He is committed to pursuing playful learning for all ages, building on a lifelong passion for all things Lego.
