Julie Stern
Julie Stern is passionate about synthesizing the best of education research into practical tools that support educators in breaking free of the industrial model of schooling and moving toward teaching and learning that promotes sustainability, equity, and well-being. She is the best-selling author of Learning that Transfers, Visible Learning for Social Studies, and Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding, Elementary and Secondary. She is the thought leader behind the global workshop series Making Sense of Learning Transfer and is a certified trainer in Visible Learning Plus. Julie is a James Madison Constitutional Fellow and taught social studies for many years in Washington, DC and her native Louisiana. You can learn more about Julie's work, here.
Jay McTighe
Jay McTighe is a veteran educator, having served as a teacher, resource specialist, program coordinator, and director of a state program for gifted students. He is an accomplished author, having co-authored 18 books, including the award-winning and best-selling Understanding by Design series with Grant Wiggins. His books have been translated into fourteen languages. Jay has also written more than 50 book chapters, articles and blogs, and been published in leading journals, including Educational Leadership (ASCD), Edutopia and Education Week. Jay has an extensive background in professional development and is a regular speaker at state, national and international conferences and workshops. He has made presentations in 47 states within the United States, in 7 Canadian provinces, and internationally in 38 countries on six continents.
Michael McDowell
Michael McDowell, EdD has been a public school educator for sixteen years as a classroom teacher, academic and athletic coach, school principal, assistant superintendent of personnel and instruction, and superintendent. Dr. McDowell currently serves as the Superintendent of the Ross School District. Previously, Dr. McDowell was a national faculty member for the Buck Institute of Education, adjunct professor at San Francisco State University, a school development coach at the New Tech Network, and an advisor to educational organizations focused on equity, excellence, and innovation. Dr. McDowell contributes time to his community by participating as the Chair for the Operational Steering Committee of the Special Education Local Plan Area, board member for the School of Environmental Leadership and as the advisory chair for One Percent for Education. He is the author of many books, most recently: Teaching for Transfer: A Guide for Designing Learning with Real-World Application (2020), and The Busy Teacher: Differentiation for Every Classroom (2021).
