Math is a complex, beautiful world of patterns and problem solving, and it has the potential to inspire creativity and innovation in our students. So why do so many students, at a very young age, view Math as an unengaging, uninspiring set of rules and algorithms? In this hands-on talk, discover the power of intentionally-designed provocations to bring joy and excitement back into Math classrooms and inject curiosity, wonder, and connection in students.

Cristina Lupiáñez
Cristina Lupiáñez grew up in Granada, Spain, where she studied BA in Foreign Language Teaching. After working as a Spanish teacher in public schools in Manchester and Bristol, UK, she moved back to Spain where she worked as a homeroom teacher for seven years. In 2018, Cristina moved to Portland, Oregon, as a Spanish Visiting Teacher and is currently the Spanish third grade homeroom teacher at the International School of Portland. She loves learning about new educational approaches and strategies to meaningfully engage students in their life-long learning process and to develop critical thinking.
Kelly Rogers
Kelly Rogers is the PYP Coordinator at The International School in Portland, Oregon. Prior to moving to Portland, Kelly had been the Math Coordinator at Washington International School in Washington DC, the Educational Technology Facilitator at The International School of Zug and Luzern in Switzerland, and an elementary classroom teacher in Virginia public schools. She loves engaging with teachers about curriculum and transdisciplinary teaching and learning, and she is passionate about changing the narrative around math education.
